International Day of Light 2025

The International Day of Light, proclaimed by UNESCO in 2015 to be celebrated on May 16, marks the anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser by T.H. Maiman in 1960. Its goal is to promote the central role of light and light-based technologies in science, culture, education, and sustainable economic development. In addition, UNESCO has declared 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, an initiative aimed at highlighting the impact of quantum physics on technology, culture, and our deeper understanding of the natural world.

On the occasion of the International Day of Light, the Italian Physical Society (SIF) and the Italian Society of Optics and Photonics (SIOF) are jointly promoting the organization of workshops, seminars, and study days led by young people and dedicated to their training. Participation is especially encouraged for Master’s and PhD students.
