“Engineering Light at the Nanoscale”
 

The Journal of European Optical Society (JEOS-RP)  is delighted to announce the Topical Issue “Engineering Light at the Nanoscale” dedicated to the memory of Professor Alessandro Belardini (Sapienza University of Rome), a brilliant researcher, an exceptional mentor, and a deeply dedicated member of the European Optical Society (EOS). Alessandro’s passing left a profound void in the optics community. Alessandro paired a brilliant scientific mind with a generous spirit, patience and dedication to teaching and knowledge dissemination. 

As a researcher, he conducted pioneering experimental work in nonlinear and chiral photonics, making enduring contributions to the fields of nanophotonics and plasmonics. His investigations notably advanced the understanding of light-matter interactions at the nanoscale, particularly through studies on second-harmonic generation in plasmonic metamaterials, the manipulation of extrinsic chirality in engineered nanostructures, and the exploration of novel nonlinear optical properties in self-assembled nanomaterials.

Beyond his technical achievements, Alessandro was a vibrant, tireless pillar of the European Optical Society (EOS) and its Italian branch, SIOF. He worked passionately to foster international collaboration and champion the growth of young scientists, most notably within PLASMONICA, the SIOF Working Group for Plasmonics and Nano-optics. Through his dedicated mentorship and characteristic kindness, he touched countless lives across Europe’s optical community. This Topical Issue serves as a celebration of both his scientific legacy and his profound human impact.

Research areas of interest for this Topical Issue include, but are not limited to:

  • Nanostructures, metasurfaces and metamaterials
  • Chiro-optical effects at the nanoscale
  • Nonlinear effects in nanostructured media
  • Photo-thermal effects in plasmonics and nano-photonics
  • Bound states in continuum in resonant nanostructures
     

Submission and publication information

Submitted manuscripts will undergo a rigorous peer-review process, ensuring the highest standards of scientific quality and integrity expected from the journal JEOS-RP. This topical issue will feature papers that offer substantial value to the field of light coupling at the nanoscale, providing a prominent platform for research to achieve widespread visibility and lasting scholarly impact.

Submission deadline for this Topical Issue is June 30, 2027. Papers can be submitted immediately or at any point until this date. Submitted articles will be reviewed on an ongoing basis and published online as they are accepted and added to this topical issue.
